This is IRSC

*KHBEC Kingborough New Business of the Year (2024)*

Since its founding in 2023, IRSC has defined what professional community theatre south of Hobart can be, providing a creative outlet for otherwise arts-starved areas; IRSC is the only theatre production company in the Kingborough and outside Huonville in the Valley.

With over 30 classes a week across several rural town halls, and regular productions in musical theatre and plays, IRSC is dedicated to expanding its knowledge, connections and quality with every project.

Isabella's Story

In 2013, just before my 10th birthday, I moved from Mackay, Queensland (where opportunities for young performers were everywhere) to Cygnet, Tasmania. In Queensland, my life was filled with Speech & Drama exams, long hours in the dance studio, and the discipline of the performing arts. But when I arrived in rural Tasmania, those same opportunities were almost non-existent.

I tried traveling to classes in Kingston, but the long hours on the road became unsustainable. Local options came and went, yet none reflected the standard and structure I had grown up with. Eventually, I fell away from the world I had loved since I was four years old.

My love of theatre reignited years later in grade 12 when I played Mrs. Phelps in Hobart College’s production of Matilda: The Musical. Being surrounded by theatre makers reminded me of the joy, belonging, and inspiration that being apart of theatre cultivates.

Soon after, I was cast as the title role in Lily with Woodbridge Life, and that opportunity led to being recommended as a choreographer with Huon Valley Theatre. At auditions for Annie Jr., over 50 children walked through the doors - and in each of them, I saw my younger self. Children with passion and potential, but only one local opportunity to perform all year.

I was frustrated that this was still the case. So in October 2022, just before my 19th birthday, I registered the Isabella Rose Stage Company. My goal was simple: to provide access, nurture talent, and create high-quality opportunities for young performers in the Huon Valley and Kingborough.

These days, I am many things; a teacher, a director, a choreographer, a producer , a manager. I advocate and incorporate inclusive practices, uplift healthy and safe performing arts experiences, and empower young performers and theatre makers.

I do the hard work so others can simply step onto the stage and shine.

Culture

At IRSC, we are dedicated to fostering a culture that is inclusive, creative, and collaborative. We celebrate the diverse perspectives and experiences that each individual brings, creating an environment where everyone feels empowered, comfortable, and free to express themselves.

Recognising that many in our community come from limited theatre backgrounds, we are committed to supporting and uplifting both established artists and newcomers. We strive to create spaces where people from all backgrounds can come together, be brave, and create bold work. We encourage all involved in our initiatives to approach their work with generosity, curiosity, kindness, and respect.

At IRSC, we are a company of connections. From the first introductions to the final bows, we build friendships and cultivate positivity throughout the entire journey of each project. Through our initiatives, we aim to remain connected and responsive to each other, our communities, our industries, and the broader global context. Regardless of your background or location, we invite you to join us in our mission to be a creative force for good in our community.

Safeguarding and Code Of Conduct

Inclusion

Inclusive Practice is essential to the work that we do, and we want to make sure that IRSC is always a welcoming and accessible place for disabled and neurodivergent young people. As part of this commitment we:

STAFF RESOURCES - Educate staff on neurodiversity and effective communication strategies to support attendees with diverse needs

QUIET ROOMS - Provide designated spaces where individuals can retreat if they feel overwhelmed.

MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS - Ensure that rehearsal and class spaces are free from unnecessary stimuli that could divert attention.

READABLE FONTS - Offer programs and materials in dyslexia-friendly fonts and formats, such as sans-serif fonts and high-contrast colour schemes.

The Isabella Rose Stage Co. has a duty of care to safeguard from harm all children and young people with whom it interacts. Children and young people occupy a central place within IRSC and our work. Our safeguarding policy details the legal requirements, organisational procedures and best practice as applicable to all staff. This policy applies to all IRSC staff, including those who work on a volunteer and freelance basis.
